Callulu

Eight cues for
self‑control.

Callulu is a Mac menu bar app. It gives you eight quiet visual cues for the moments that decide how a workday goes — starting, staying with something, stepping back, and stopping at a reasonable hour.

Requires macOS 13 or later. Apple silicon and Intel.

The Callulu menu open in the macOS menu bar, listing eight cues.
Everything Callulu does starts from one icon in the menu bar.

What the eight cues do

Each one is a single visual signal. Nothing is measured, and nothing is scored. You decide what the cue means.

In use

SHADE dimming the edges of the screen around a document window.
SHADE — dim everything but the work.
UNDINE drawing a water surface across the screen.
UNDINE — a cue to return to calm.
LUNA softening the whole screen at the end of the day.
LUNA — the signal to end the day.
Callulu settings: colour, effect strength, light position, launch at login.
Strength, screen position, and sound are all adjustable.

Two editions

The eight cues, the settings, and the privacy position are identical in both. They differ in one thing: whether you can run a cue from the keyboard without opening the menu.

Mac App Store

Callulu

  • All eight cues
  • Effect strength, screen position, accent colour, sound
  • Start at login
  • Reviewed by Apple; purchase and updates handled by Apple
  • Runs in Apple's sandbox
  • No keyboard shortcuts — cues run from the menu
  • No keyboard backlight response

Direct from Nowthy

Callulu Full

  • Everything in the App Store edition
  • Run any cue from the keyboard. Assign ⌘ and ⇧ patterns to seven of the eight — no window, no menu, no reaching for the mouse
  • Three sensitivity levels, so the patterns fit how fast you actually type
  • The keyboard backlight follows LIGHTNING and returns to exactly where it was
  • Notarized by Apple and updated directly

Keyboard shortcuts need macOS Input Monitoring permission, which is why they cannot ship in the App Store edition. Apple's sandbox does not allow it. You grant the permission yourself, and it can be revoked at any time — key events are read only to match the patterns you assigned, and are never stored or sent anywhere.

Neither edition is on sale yet. Write to support@nowthy.com if you would like to hear when they ship.

Nothing is recorded

Callulu has no account and no sign-in. It does not track what you work on, how long you worked, or whether you finished. There is no history, no score, and no streak to keep.

The app makes no network connections at all. Your settings are stored on your Mac and never leave it. Nothing is sent to Nowthy or to anyone else, because there is nothing that sends.

Callulu is not a timer, a task manager, or a habit tracker. There is nothing to fall behind on.

A note on light. LIGHTNING produces a brief flash across the whole screen, and several other cues change the brightness of the display. If you are sensitive to flashing light, or have a condition affected by it, turn LIGHTNING off. Every cue can be switched off individually, and the effect strength can be lowered.

Support

Questions, problems, or ideas — write to support@nowthy.com. Please include your macOS version and which cue was involved.

A cue did not appear.
Check that the cue is switched on in the menu, and that the master switch at the bottom of the list is on. If an effect is too faint to see, raise Effect Strength in Settings.
Can I turn everything off without quitting?
Yes. The switch beside “Turn All On/Off” disables every cue at once.
Does Callulu keep running after I close the menu?
It stays in the menu bar. Cues only appear when you run them, or, in the case of WISP, at the interval you set.
Where are my settings stored?
In your user preferences on your own Mac. Nothing is synced or uploaded.
